I lived in new orleans for years and it’s a second home to me. So this tragedy strikes home.
I am in Paris at the moment, attending a workshop whose goal is to open access to scientific information in the developing world. A gentleman from Senegal told me that Katrina’s aftermath represents the non-catastrophe reality of much of the developing world.
We at Science Commons and Creative Commons are trying to change that reality. In the interim, if you care about culture in the united states, or simply believe in the mission of the Tulane tropical disease research center, please take a moment to give to one of the charities managing relief operations. I’d recommend the red cross – http://www.redcross.org.
